What a day.... Getting to the nitty gritty now. I have a bit of advice for those of you with elderly parents. If they need to go to the hospital for any reason and something just doesnt sound or feel right, it probably isnt. Question it, question it, question it. You MUST be their advocate. I was read my mothers file today, as much as I hate to say this, it was filled with untruths. An investigation has now been opened and I was able to conference call my mother into the call so they could hear it directly from her mouth. The file stated that all was good with her minus the broken ribs. She had two broken ribs and normally walks with a walker. Due to her injuries she wasnt able to get up out of a chair. So how is that all good? Please note originally they stated they were admitting her. In addition to that the file states that she was going home where she had family to care for her. She told them today that she told the ER that she lived alone and had no one there to help her. Next it stated that she was sent home with one of those lovely little breathing devices to exercise her lungs so pneumonia wouldnt set in due to her not being able to get around with the injuries. It also stated that she was given a little training session on when and how to use it. - guess what? - no device given, no training session happened. How much do you want to bet I see this on the bill - isnt that called insurance fraud if its on the bill? Next it states she would be given a Voucher for a cab and that they would call the cab service they use to get her home. - Nope, never happened they assisted her out to the lobby and left her there. They also walked by her 4 or 5 times and told her she was discharged. As she sat there trying to figure out what to do another nurse cane by so she asked if she could call a cab drivers on her cell and they said yes. Remember, she is in a chair that she cannot lift herself out of in the lobby and has a walker that she now cannot use but must transport by herself when this supposed cab would arrive. So next up, one of my cousins calls her to see how the admission is going when she tells him she needs to call a cab to go home. So he drives there to pick her up. When he gets there two people from ER are required to assist her out and she is placed in vertical stretcher and pushed out to the car. At that point they attempt to get her into the car and she is in so much pain that she is screaming in agony as they place her in the car. So bottom line; no one including the Dr. asked her if she had anyone at home to assist her. No one gave her the breathing device or showed her how to use it and no one offered her a voucher or called a cab to get her home. All of these things are in her file and signed off by the attending ER physician. Should be interesting to see what comes of this whole mess when the hospital calls me to tell me what their new findings are. I know for a fact they have cameras throughout the whole hospital and parking areas so if they start to back track - Im going to ask to see those when I arrive in Ł.A. Anyway.... Remember if it doesnt sound right, feel right, it probably isnt and dont be intimidated by them because they are a doctor and you arent. Rant done for now...
