What a difference a year makes! One year ago today I was taken by ambulance from the emergency room in Clayton to Wake Med hospital in Raleigh with pneumonia. During the time before I went to the ER, I laid in the bed, drenched in sweat, completely dependent on Joe and was so sick I didnt care whether I lived or died. Towards the end before I went to the ER, I had given up thinking the next day would be better. After I was so confused that I didnt know where I was, I finally let Joe take me to the ER. What I do remember was him telling me that one day, I would be grateful for the experience. After 4 days in the hospital and a very long recovery, I realized he was right. I was grateful. Grateful for my life and grateful for the people in it. Thank you Joseph Laba and Hilary Canty for taking care of me. Thank you Adam Riner for your medical advice and telling Joe to get me to the ER ASAP - the doctor said another 48 hours would have been too late. To Andrew Roo Farr, Bill Donovan, Monica Haun and Brian Haun.....thank you for coming to see me in the hospital. To Dan Fortmann, Gail Arneke, Chris Adams and the CMF Board thank you for sending flowers. To everyone who called and sent notes, thank you. To pneumonia, I may be the most thankful for you. I learned that I was loved because of you. I learned that everything and everyone in my life is a gift. This Thanksgiving was the most important one in my life because I was able to reflect and recognize all my gifts and be truly and humbly grateful for each and every one. I am happier and more content than Ive ever been before. When I realized what I almost lost I realized what I really had. What a difference a year makes!
