What a fantastic, awesome and eventful day! It all started with Councillor Sue Downing as she attended first thing in the morning. She is a great representative for Oldbury and expressed her passion and admiration for the amazing services that Nova Training provide for the 16 – 18 year olds and NEETs that attend. Penny Haytree and Satty Badhan took Councillor Downing on a tour around Nova, she had the opportunity to look around the centre, to see our facilities for Construction, Motor Vehicle, Functional Skills, Business Administration and meet and speak to our learners. Councillor Downing met Laura Clarke and Sukhjinder Chahal in Evelyn Playfords Maths Functional Skills lesson. The Councillor talked about how important Maths was in everyday life and how we dont realise this until we are out shopping how we can actually put into practise what we have learnt! She emphasised the fact that Maths is a very important key to employability. Next we met Ryan Percival who is studying Business Administration with Diane Paddock. Ryan explained how he is on work placement at Loaves n Fishes and also the different qualifications he had achieved. Councillor Downing and Ryan talked about how work experience are the qualifications that one could use if you arent qualified. She talked about how she was the eldest of four, and at that time to help her parents she went straight into a job after leaving school. She went on to say as she progressed from her first job, that the work experience she had achieved was her qualifications and this helped her tremendously. The next part of our tour took us to the construction and Motor Vehicle areas. We met Phil in Bricklaying, Patrick in Motor Vehicle and Derek in Painting and Decorating. Whilst we were there Shannon Lane had the opportunity to speak with Councillor Downing. Councillor Downing really thrived on the fact that Shannon was studying Painting and Decorating and encouraged Shannon to take this to the next level. As a female in this industry, Councillor Downing took great pride and pleasure advising how amazing the opportunity was for Shannon to excel and have her own business one day. It was phenomenal to see the potential that Councillor Downing could see in Nova Training and our learners. We really enjoyed Councillor Downings visit. She is an exceptional woman who represents Oldbury. Thank you Councillor Downing and we look forward to your next visit. Batmans Hill School, Perryfields School, Juniper and Seetec came bringing with them students to “Have A Go”. The centre was filled with the hustle and bustle of learners and the thought that there is a great future if you put your mind to it! Overall the “Have A Go Day” has been a great success. Thank you to all the people who took part and helped organise the event. Until our next have a go day, Nelson Mandela once said, “Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world”. Nova represents a powerful and meaningful team who want to make a change in young peoples lives. Whether you want to advance your career, expand your mind or simply explore a new interest, Nova Training are here to support you with qualifications and vocational courses and careers advise.
