What a splendid morning! My work with pro se litigants in United States District Court for the Northern District New York, on behalf of the Federal Court Bar Association for the Northern District of New York, is a very satisfying venture. I have given it some years now. Those of you who know me are aware of my penchant for helping the little guy against Goliath any day of the week. The desperate battles for the lost causes are the ones worth fighting, as Clarence Darrow pointed out. The program that has been designed in our District through Clerk of Courts Larry Baerman and the Federal Court Bar Association has been nationally recognized now. I was proud to be a part of a half hour video for the Federal Judicial Center in Washington D.C., demonstrating the project’s workings and then discussing its virtues. The Chief United States Magistrate Judge for the District of Alabama, the Honorable Susan Russ Walker, traveled here today, along with attorney Kelly Fitzgerald Pate, of Balch &Bingham LLP in Montgomery, Alabama, in order that they could learn more of our program to institute it in their District. What a wonderful discussion, and what a true feeling of gratification to be a part of instituting a program for people to be helped so far away from where we have begun. I love every part of what I do in my law practice.
