What a whirlwind and with hail and thunderstorms. My life got a snappy beat to it starting last Thursday. Erica and Sam Vlahavas daughter and son in law left Colorado headed toward Winfield. Friday Colby and Jacquie Rhodd son and daughter in law left Iowa headed for us in Meriden. They arrived at supper time and we all got to enjoy one of Karens big breakfast. I got to see, but I did not touch the baby bump. But there it was, hardly contained myself. With them they brought Zeus their new Boxer. He is brindle colored. My day was complete. I loved that baby bump and that dog. Friday Colby and Jacquie toured Topeka and took Karen out for lunch. Colby got a short break from the Coast Guard. Spring he is often gone more. They were able to come back to Meriden for a wedding reception (dinner and a drink) for Mr. and Mrs. Michael Scott Purdon, Friday evening. Congratulation to them. They also got to see his high school buddy Morgan and his boys. Amazing, I did not wait up and worry, they were back around the stroke of midnight. How time marched on. Friday evening, Sam and Erica made it to Winfield, they spent time perusing around Winfield, the old fair grounds where Sam made friends with an old friend of ours. Kendra, at the horse barn. Sam I think likes horses, so that gave he and I something to talk about. floods, fires and the race car death. They visited sis Michele Sweeney and then had a funny story about her furniture lol, of course Michele had already told me. Saturday up and at em. All cars, dogs, luggage, food and gifts loaded and on the road at 09:15. Stopped at Emporia, young son Tim and girlfriend ready to go. So everyone heads to Winfield. It was a bright sun shining day. They had burnt pasture, otherwise uneventful trip. We arrived in Winfield at 12:15. Me being more frugal than ever before picked the old Sonner Motel It is very old and dated, otherwise clean and safe. We were on the same floor, (one) and same block so we could visit back and forth and nearly have the price of the competitors. We then headed to 200 West Millington, the City of Winfields rental hall. Wow, it was great, all we needed. Again, some of the rental halls are costly, would recommend this room. Erica and Sam had done their magic. Turned that room into some baby party house. Ericas colors, red, yellow and blue, yellow carnation center pieces with dark blue table cover. The babies room is blue with a nautical theme. The long tables were full of colorful gifts, bags and creative stuff. More on that. The two longest table front and center with the blue table cover, one end meats and cheeses, breads, mixed nuts, mints as a hostess gift, a watermelon carved out looking like a baby carrier, a cantaloupe for the head and lots of mixed fruits added. Too cute, I am telling you, the cake was even better, a little head and butt laying on the sheet cake. My sister and her daughter in law Allyson Smith I think were in charge. An easy yellow punch was served. Games played with winners being Deb Minor and Karen Rhodd. We will always be grateful to those whom helped with this part. But Erica and Sam you are tops drawer to me. I love you both. Imagine sterns, anchors, boats, sailor persons on the walls of the city building. The presents were a gold mine. We have always been blessed with lots of good family and friends. People were invited to meet or reunite with my family since we were all in Winfield at the same time. You all were too generous but appreciated. Our family is getting so small, special guest, Great grandma Judy Garner, Great Aunt Wanda Caudill and second cousins Erema Cooper, Pat Dobbins, Maternal Great Aunt Loyce and Cousin Lori Bates Caudill Freeman. Paternal great uncle Jack Assuman and daughter Marlene. Mrs Norma Mattingly Colbys first grade teacher dropped in. Everyone was special but naming well over forty names is too hard for me lol. We wrapped it up with our kids at WoodChucks, been there forever with many different names. Burgers and fries and a beer not bad. Sunday departure, Sam being Greek, his church is very important to him and Erica. They left Winfield and went into Wichita for Greek Services. Karen and I, Colby and Jacquie, Tim and Bri met up with Erica and Sam after church at Jimmys Egg, kind of tradition. As usual tearful goodbyes. Then all of us off into the thunderstorms and hail, Erica and Sam stayed in Colby for the night, slick roads. Thank God for our time together with family and friends and safe travels for all.
