What an adventure we had! I bought a truck Thursday evening. In order to get it back to the cabin I was going to have to tow a vehicle back from near Indianapolis. So here we are 10pm thurs loading the jeep up onto my car trailer which I hauled up to bring the truck.back. Last check, chains tight, binders closed and the handles secured. Check the safety chains, lights, coupler. We are good to go. We are off in the truck towing the jeep back. Heading down I65 to Louisville. No problems cruising right along 60 miles an hour. A little after midnight we are on the back roads of southern Indiana. .Finely we start up our road to cabin. I drop the truck down into 1st gear and start up the hill. Up we climb around the corner with the 100 ft cliff, now starting up the long step part. Half way up the tires start hopping and I am lousing traction. everything comes to a stop. I try to start again and nothing but wheel spin the in gravel and I am not going anywhere. I look over at my son and ask him if he has any ideas, because I am fresh out. Between the both of us we decide that the best course of action would be to back the Jeep off the trailer and lighten the load. So here we are,1 am Friday morning unloading a jeep off a trailer on a single lane gravel road on a up hill, what could go wrong? Binders are undone, chains come off and we are ready to back the Jeep off. I position my son at the back corner of the trailer so he can watch and make sure the jeep is aligned with the trailer ramps. I feel it, once I have the backed up the jeep on the trailer to the point where the weight is on the backside of the trailer axles it unloads the weight off the trucks rear wheels and the truck,,trailer and jeep start sliding down hill. I look at my son out of the driver side window as I go sliding by. Now i am along for the ride. Did I mention the 100ft cliff a 100 yards behind me. It did come to mind as I was picking up speed. Luckly for me, the truck, trailer with the jeep on it and me inside the jeep find the hillside and 2 foot ditch on the passenger side 30 yards before the curve and the cliff. .I felt so bad for my son as the look on his face as he was running back to check on me is a look I never want to see again. Now what to do, I got a truck, tandem axle trailer with a jeep on top of it in a ditch. I tell my son to walk to the cabin (3/4 miles) and get the tractor.. He makes it back with the tractor. I tell him we got to move the jeep to the front of trailer to get weight on the trucks rear. I was lucky that even with the passenger side axles of the trailer in the ditch the angle was not so serve that I couldnt move the jeep forward on the trailer, so that I did. Now I tell my son I going to try to pull it with truck only as I dont want risk chaining the tractor to the truck together and have the whole lot siding backwards with him on the tractor. I got in the truck and Ill be damn if i wasnt able to pull it out of the ditch. Just moving the weight to trucks rear end made all the difference in the world. The rest of the way up to the cabin was made with minor wheel spin and wheel hop. What a way to learn an lesson on weight distribution.:-)
