What are adjectives? According to Dictionary- Modifying nouns and pronouns by describing a particular quality of the word. What we can draw from the specific explanation of Adjectives are that they are words used to describe another word. There are eight English parts of speech according to Wikipedia and Adjectives are one of these eight. Therefore Adjectives play a vital role in shaping the way English is designed to be heard and taught. Let’s look at some examples of how Adjectives are used- They live in a house. (no adjective) They live in a beautiful house. (beautiful is the adjective used in the sentence) As you can see in the example above, a house is a noun. Beautiful is used in the second sentence to describe the quality of the house. Take note that any other describing word can be inserted to describe a house. Perhaps the word ”dirty” or ”big”. Still unsure? Here’s another example- He writes letters. (no adjective) He writes meaningless letters. (meaningless is the adjective used in the sentence) The noun in this sentence is letters. And in the second sentence it is used to describe the quality of the letters. If you are unable to identify the adjective straight away, try to identify the noun as the adjective will be used to describe the noun.
