What are some of the most popular myths about IITians? Here is an interesting question asked on a public forum, and answers given by Dwarakanath Prabhu and Navin Kabra What are some of the most popular myths about IITians? DP: Ragging I don’t know about other IITs but IITB has absolutely no “ragging”. At max a few intro sessions. In fact there was a case of reverse ragging when a junior said, “Jeb mein 10,000 hai to sawaal pooch.” The Dean is pretty strict about all this. There are no good-looking girls in IIT Not exactly true. But the ratio of boys:girls in my batch (IITB JEE 2008) was about 10:1. Before that it was around 12:1. Thankfully there is an increase in the number of girls in IIT. Some of them are quite attractive at even a normal level (there is something called IIT standard which is lower than a normal level of looks). IITians know everything about everything They don’t. Some IITians can be really really ignorant. IITians can fix your computers/cars/ACs Sorry. We can’t. Even the professors can’t. All IITians drink, smoke Quite a few do. Yes. But not more than any other college. IITians study all the time No. A semester is for 4 months (only!) But with exams almost every other day (at least in mech) we’re forced to study. But not all the time by any means. There are so many activities to keep us occupied. Even when there’s no “organized” activity going on you can see a lot of guys playing some sort of sport or answering questions on quora :P IITians get INR 5 million jobs Media blows up everything. The average package in IIT Bombay was INR 7.5 lacs. If you exclude salaries in dollars it would be even less. The big numbers you see in the newspapers are the highest packages for graduates who get a job in the US at facebook, microsoft etc. You’ll be surprised to know how many of them actually decline the offers. A USD 100,000 is not all that impressive if you think about it in comparison to an INR 2,000,000 job in India. NK: These are all misconceptions, but quite widespread: IITians are socially inept geeks. (Reality: some are, but most arent.) IITians are only interested in technology. (Reality: some of the best amateur singers, actors, writers I’ve met have been people I met in IIT.) Most IITians go to the US. (Reality: actually many of them never go to the US and go on to take on important roles in Indian industry. Many who did go to the US in the 1990s are now back in India.) Most IITians go into the software sector. (Reality: There are many, many IITians in all kinds of diverse fields – Advertising Industry Exec, International Development (Charity/Aid) Consultant, Movie Director, Consumer Goods Marketing Exec, Medical Technology Scientist, Banker, Insurance Industry Exec – these are just examples of people from my close circle of friends.) IITians are low on emotional quotient. Logic trumps feelings. (Reality: Unsure. Someone should do a survey of spouses of IITians to see if this is true or just a misconception.) IITians think that the JEE rank is the most important achievement of their life. (Reality: Maybe this one is true! :-) - source
