What are the factors that predict academic performance? Research isn’t always disseminated to the public as well or as much as it should. Yet, a sad observation is that the decision makers in Universities, the institutions that produce research and knowledge, do not always consult empirical findings during the strategic planning, decisions, and day to day business operations. As a result they may end up investing in products, and interventions that aim to assist students perform better, with minimal outcomes. Those who do are ahead in the game and offer valuable services to their students. I’ve always advised my students to start their projects by reading recent review papers. In this case, that would be Richardson, Abraham, and Bond’s (2012) meta-analysis of 13 years of research into antecedents of university students’ grade point average (GPA), published in the Psychological Bulletin.
