What are the signs of Anorexia Nervosa? • Not maintaining a normal weight (underweight) • Amenorrhea, lack of periods • Fear of gaining any weight what so ever • Dramatic Weight Loss • Lanugo: soft, fine hair that grows on the face and body (related to hypothyroidism) • Obsession with calories • Loves cooking for others, but does not consume. • Dieting even though you do not need to • Ritual like behaviour: Food may be cut into tiny pieces • Not eating in front of others • Hiding or disposing of food • Purging: use laxatives, diet pills, ipecac syrup, or water pills; may engage in self-induced vomiting; • Frequent, strenuous exercise • Belief that you are fat, when you are not • Intolerant to cold frequently complains of being cold from loss of insulating body fat or poor circulation resulting from extremely low blood pressure. The body temperature lowers (hypothermia) in effort to conserve energy • Depression • Solitude: avoid friends and family; withdrawn and secretive • Swollen joints • Bloating • Bad breath (starvation-induced ketosis) • Hair loss or thinning • Fatigue • Rapid mood swings • Hypokalemia (a drop in potassium levels); abnormal heart rhythms, constipations, fatigue, muscle damage and paralysis • Frequent illness • Wearing loose clothing to hide weight loss • Feeling worthless or hopeless FACTS: 50% to 70% of individuals suffer from depression 1 in 4 exhibit signs of OCD
