What bothers me, more than the traffic and more than the occasional obnoxious and/ or careless and/ or thoughtless tourist, is that the leaders of Baguio have not yet learned to manage tourist crowds despite the city being a holiday destination for many years. Maybe if public transportation pointedly targeted tourist spots, tourists wouldnt feel the need to bring their vehicles. A common bay for tourist transport for better access maybe? How would a guest know that they need to go to Kayang to ride an Asin jeep to get to the Ben Cab Museum? In many other tourist cities, public transport is strategic and streamlined so that tourist spots are included in specific routes. As for the trash, maybe it would help if there were actually trash bins around the city. And its probably time to revisit the discussion on a sustainable waste management and segregation scheme. Lets not delude ourselves into thinking that the trash problem surfaces only when the tourists are here. The ordeal this holiday season should be a call to action for our leaders to figure it out. Baguio is a mess and it isnt because of the tourists.
