What can any guitarist or producer learn from the work of Jimmy - TopicsExpress

What can any guitarist or producer learn from the work of Jimmy Page who turns 71 today? I recommend studying the masterful guitar arrangements on Zep classics such as Ten Years Gone, Stairway to Heaven, Archilles Last Stand, Rain Song and many more. The orchestrating of guitars and tones which Jimmy called the guitar army will give you a ton of inspiration and ideas on layering techniques. Here are a few things to listen for: 1. The type of guitar. Is it an acoustic, 12 string, electric? 2. How are the guitars panned in the mix? Left, right or the middle? 3. How big is the guitar sound? In Zep the drums were HUGE and the guitars small in comparison but made to fit so the overall effect was still HEAVY. 4. The type of distortion used. Relatively clean, overdriven or dirty sounding? 5. The entrance of the various members of the guitar army. My fav is the arrangement on Ten Years Gone. With a less capable producer the song could have ended in a big mess with the sheer number of guitars but in Pages hands you get studio magic!
