What does Dorobucci mean? Dorobucci is the title of the hit song by the Marvin Crew led by Don Jazzy. What is the meaning of Dorobucci? This is a question for me in the area of popular culture, media, religion and society. During my my two months stay in Nigeria while doing my research, I was also testing the idea that hip-hop culture could be a language to engage the youth with theology/religion. I ran workshops for the youth at Onitsha, Awka, and Ahiara. At these workshops, I asked the youth to sing the latest and best known hip-hop song. Spontaneously, it would be Dorobucci. Then, I divided them up into groups and asked each group to choose a hip-hop song and listen to it again together. I gave them three questions to work with; the meaning of the song, does the song use any religious language, and any biblical/religious image that comes to mind while listening to the song. It was a fun as well as a task. Not surprisingly, the youth have a lot to teach me at these workshops. In those songs, the ideas of identity, intimacy, and independence as the core values in youth formation are easily discernible. They serve as my entree into youth formation discussions. I heard the youth use almost all the popular hip-hop music in Nigeria. “Leekwa Ukwu” “Aiyee” “Skelewu” “Ada Ada” “Johnny.” An outstanding fact is that none of the groups ever chose Dorobucci as the song to work with in spite of its popularity. I had no less than 25 groups within the timeframe. I then asked them why they did not choose the most popular song. I remember the astonishment whenever I made the remark. One youth offered, “We do not know the meaning. I think it is Dorononsense” And I replied, “And you are singing it.” “ Yes, Because it is Dorosweet.” I searched for the lyrics and the video. Practically, every member of Marvin Crew came out and sang Dorosomething starting with the boss, Don Jazzy. The song, in my opinion, is celebrating Dorosomebody and/or Dorosomething.
