What goes around comes around. Here I am 40 years later teaching someone in my family how to drive a car in the parking lot of Walnut Ridge. Back in 1973 it was my sister, followed by my brother the next year, teaching them how to drive a 1967 stick shift VW Beetle. Fast forward 40 years later and I am teaching my daughter, Emily, how to start my 1999 Toyota Corolla, put it in gear and drive around the perimeter of the parking lot. As she is driving around listening to me tell her when and how to apply the brakes, when to stop, put on the turn signal and to avoid the potholes in the parking lot, I start remembering what I did in instructing my siblings doing the same thing. Almost as if history is repeating itself. One thing I am not going to repeat as my daughter is learning how to drive is to have her nearly put an extra doorway in the side of the Walnut Park Recreation Center as my sister almost did. Here my sister was, barreling down the road to the entrance of the rec center aiming straight toward the big wall of the gym. I was screaming at my sister to hit the brakes. She panics and hit the accelerator, forcing me to grab the hand brakes and move my foot over to push in the clutch. We miss hitting the wall by three feet. Phew! I told my daughter about the incident with her aunt and she assures me that will not happen with her. But I am sure there will be something as memorable as she is learning how to drive. :)
