What good is the charity of giving if the gift is unethically - TopicsExpress

What good is the charity of giving if the gift is unethically sourced? Many of us are acutely aware of unethical or unsustainable production methods prevalent in our materialistic society. I think it is in the spirit of Christmas to make a conscious effort to be aware of how our gifts to others are produced. This is called ethical consumerism and provides market incentives for companies to make better choices, making ethical products more affordable and unethical products unsaleable. Companies have the profit incentive to hide negative information about their production line, thus there are reasonable grounds for suspicion by default. Unfortunately no products are labelled unethical or unsustainable when they are, so we have to investigate for ourselves. It can be a bit of effort, but certification makes it easier (e.g. fair trade or sustainably sourced) as long as we also verify these certifications are credible. Its worth the price to help fight global issues like wage slavery or destruction of biodiversity. Put your money where your heart is :) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethical_consumerism https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conflict_resource https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fair_trade
