What happened that night? Wait for next episode. 30.7.2013 Episode 7: What happened that niight? WE were not able to sleep for the most of the night and it was only early morning that we could steal a couple of hours sleep. Baba woke us late in the morning and informed that the young calf was missing. It was Wednesday, the market day, and father it was usual for father that after his weekly tours, he would be with us to make necessary purchases for the week. He returned at about 8am and then the search for the calf began. After intensive search of about one hour, at about one km away, the half-eaten calf was found hanging on a baheda tree (to protect from the scavengers, like hyena, fox and vultures etc, the panther normally hangs its prey on some tree). In the village there was only one person, by name Ramadhar Chaudhary (named changed) who had a licensed double-barrel gun and known for his hunting skill. Father contacted him and it was decided to go for the hunting expedition. Before the sun-set, the carcass of the calf was dragged to a vantage point below the Baheda tree. By 8 pm, with all the necessary paraphernalia, Ramadhar and my father were at the same tree, the panther had hanged the calf. Naturally, out of anxiety, and to some extent fear, there was no question of our sleeping. We just anxiously waited to hear the gun shot. The time ticked off – one hour, two hour, three, four hour – and there no sound of the gun. Disappointed we were on the verge of dosing-off when suddenly the atmosphere reverberated with a bang of the gun shot. There was no bound to our joy. An hour later, father returned and announced that the panther had been shot dead. At 9am Ramadhar and father again went in search of the panther. And lo and behold! What they shot was not the panther but hyena.
