What happened to the tea from The William? In January, Thomas - TopicsExpress

What happened to the tea from The William? In January, Thomas Hutchinson, apparently ordered the tea brought to the mainland in defiance of the patriots. What eventually happened to this tea is not known, nor is it known if the controversial tax on the tea was ever paid. Greenough found a Provincetown buyer for his tea. One chest was turned over for resale. Patriots in Provincetown seized that chest of tea and burned it. Greenough carried the remaining chest--containing about 350 pounds of tea--to Wellfleet. Part of that was sold to a man from Eastham. The patriots continued their pursuit. A committee of Wellfleet patriots grabbed the rest, but, for reasons we may never know, that committee apparently returned the tea to Greenough the following June. Presumably Greenough sold this tea to anyone willing to buy--including patriots. There is no record that the tax on the tea was ever paid. #2014btp
