What happens when a mines closes? The first two images are taken at the Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) at Martha Mine in Waihi, New Zealand. Tailings are the finely ground rock slurry which remains after gold and silver have been extracted. When all mining is complete the impoundment slopes are grassed or covered with low growing native vegetation. Flax and other native plants are introduced to attract waterfowl and a variety of native birds. The third image is of a local, closed mine showing how mine sites can be rehabilitated.
