What if I wrote the following program note?: “My brass quintet, Persistent Tears of Mnemosyne (2012) is written for two trumpets in C, horn in F, trombone , and tuba. At times, the instruments employ mutes, but are most often called upon to seamlessly interact with each other by imitating each other, or sharply contrasting one another. I wrote the 18 movements of the work on cream-colored manuscript paper, in horizontal “landscape” format, using an Osmiroid Pen and India Ink. The notational conventions are bounded by principles elucidated in “The Essential Dictionary of Music Notation”, and reference to Alfred Blatter’s “Orchestration/Instrumentation”. In performance, all the players read from score to assure ensemble coordination. The total duration of the work, while 18 minutes in length, appropriates the time spans so that some movements are longer than a minute and others shorter. The intentional dropping of mutes on the floor is intended as part of the indeterminate and quasi-theatrical element of the piece, and a whimsical nod to the work of Eric Satie.”
