What is Eid e Zahra (as)? By Syed Hadi Hasan It is customary within the Shia community mainly those who belong to the Indian subcontinent to celebrate the 9th of Rabiul awwal as Eid e Zahra (as). Why we uphold this celebration, the clear-cut answer is not found in our scripture. However, what we understand of this celebration is as follows: 1. We celebrate this day because according to some scholars, after revenging the culprits of Karbal, Mukhtar (rz) sent the severed heads of their leaders such as Abaidullah bin Zyad, Umar Sa’ad etc. to Imam Sajjad (as) that happened to arrive Madina on 9th of Rabiul awwal. Seeing their evil heads, Imam Sajjad (as), for the first time after the massacre of his family in Karbal smiled and asked his family to end the mourning. ‘Our followers have been created from remainder of the clay we have been created from, they rejoice when we are pleased and they mourn when we are sad.’ (Imam Sadiq (as) ) Based on this and many other traditions, we mourn for two months and eight days and celebrate the 9th of Rabiul awwal and all the happy occasions of Ahulbayt (as). The completion of Mukhtar’s revenge should have definitely pleased Lady Fatima (as) as it did to Imam Sajjad (as), hence this day is called Eid e Zahra (as). 2. 9th of Rabiul awwal also marks the beginning of the Imamat/ divine leadership of the Imam of our time (as). Hence, it is considered a wondrous day for all those who are impatiently awaiting for his reappearance. And since Imam Mahdi (as) is saved by Allah to prevail the religion of Allah (st) on the entire land after cleansing it from all types of injustices and crimes. Also he will avenge all the oppressors particularly those who targeted Ahlulbayt (as), the most innocent and infallible servants of Allah (st). This indeed will greatly please Lady Zahra (as). Perhaps this is another reason why this day is called Eid e Zahra. Let us spend every single moment of our lives to attain the pleasure of Allah, Prophet Muhammad (saww) and his Pure Household (as) particularly the Master of our time Imam Hujjat (aj). Happy Eid e Zahra to all
