What is Eidul-Adha? Feast Of Sacrifice/ Eidul-Adha: This is a feast to be celebrated at the last lunar month when Muslims are to go Makkah to perform pilgrimage ( Hajj). This Feast composed of (4) days. For those who have perform pilgrimage, they take off from their job an average of two to three weeks. That month is called Zul-Hijjah. This festival reminds Muslims of the great sacrifice of Prophet Abraham (peace be upon him) when he was about to sacrifice his only son Ismail ( Ismael) for the love of Allah. Every Muslim, who can afford it, is expected to sacrifice an animal, a sheep or a goat. For bigger animal ( a cow or a camel), a group of five individual may share the cost of sacrificing one animal. After sacrificing an animal, Muslims are to distribute the meat into three parts: one-third to the needy, one-third to the relatives, and one third for ones own family. This tradition inculcates into the minds of Muslims the concept of sacrificing ones money, time, effort, etc., all for the love of Allah. It also builds up a feeling of concern and a sense of sharing among friends, relatives, neighbors, and the needy. During this feast, Muslims congregate to offer the morning prayer in big crowds. They do recite Special Chanting of the Feast. Such chanting start the night before the Feast, and continue till fourth days. They visit each other and exchange gifts. They visit cemeteries and make special Duaa for the dead. In the World, Muslims take off one day so as to observe the Feast. The Eid -Adha chanting goes like this below. Allahu Akbar, Allahuu Akbar, Allahu Akbar. La ilaha illa-L- Lah. Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest. The is no deity but Allah.
