What is Mycoplasma Felis? Mycoplasma felis is a very small bacteria, often found as part of the normal resident bacteria on surfaces of the eye and upper respiratory tract. The role that this bacteria plays in actual disease is controversial, and mechanisms by which this agent may cause disease are poorly understood. What signs are associated with feline Mycoplasma? Feline mycoplasma is a minor component of the feline upper respiratory infection complex. Signs associated with this infection may include conjunctivitis (eye infection), nasal congestion, and pneumonia. How is Mycoplasma felis transmitted? Infection is primarily through contact with an infected cat. Patients in stressed or crowded conditions or patients who are young or have other, concurrent, diseases are at higher risk. How is Mycoplasma felis diagnosed? Diagnosis is primarily based on clinical signs. In most simple cases of feline upper respiratory infection, the signs and symptoms are treated, and the disease resolves in 1-2 weeks. In more chronic or severe cases, diagnosis of the specific agent(s) responsible may be necessary, and this can be accomplished through special laboratory testing. How is Mycoplasma felis treated? Treatment is typically aimed at treatment of symptoms. Mycoplasma responds well to oral antibiotics (or topical antibiotics when the eye is involved). Other treatment may include nursing care for nasal congestion, dehydration, lack of appetite, or pneumonia. How is Mycoplasma felis prevented? Contact with potentially infected cats or kittens should be avoided. Take care when introducing new cats to the household or after handling potentially infected cats.
