What is Prostate? The prostate gland is minimal in size until puberty, when it grows to 2 x 4 cm, or the size of a walnut. It is situated below the bladder, just above the rectum. The prostate weighs eight grams and is doughnutshaped around the urethra (the tube from the urinary bladder to the penis). Prostate Enlargement Prostate Enlargement (BPH - Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia or Hypertrophy) is caused by the “inner” or fibromuscular portion growing excessively, often to 30-40 grams, and as much as 200 grams! BPH can be thought of as a garden hose with a clamp closing it off causing may symptoms. Symptoms of BPH Urgency (hurry to the washroom), interrupted or stop-start of urine stream, weak stream, and interrupted sleep to void many times in the night, leaking or dribbling urine. Untreated BPH can lead to bladder infections, bladder or kidney damage, bladder stones and even incontinence. Test to diagnose If you have any combination of the symptoms, see your doctor who will perform a digital rectal exam (DRE) and may order an ultrasound scan and/or prostate specific antigen blood test. Treatment Surgery is mostly prescribed for the treatment of prostate enlargement. However, a non-surgical approach is available to help reduce the enlargement and maintain the prostate health. This approach is called Immunotherapy. What is Immunotherapy? Immunotherapy is a defined as "treatment of disease by inducing, enhancing, suppressing or repairing immune response?". The active agent of our Immunotherapy approach is called Glutathione (GSH). This molecule with its enzymes is in every cells of the body including the prostate gland cells. Researchers have found that abnormal growth in prostate tissues often corresponds to deficiencies in these glutathione enzymes especially glutathione S-transferese (GST), which has several sub-types. The balance of these sub-types varies from normal prostate tissue to hypertrophic and cancerous prostates. The objective of Immunotherapy strategy for prostate enlargement is to: 1.replenishes deficiency and balance the various glutathione enzyme sub-types especially GST to repair damaged prostatic cells 2.inhibits the expression of Androgen receptors, and 3.hightens the function of Dendritic cells (a type of B-cells responsible for activating T-cell, soldiers of the immune system). These cells can then recognize prostate antigen and become activated. Once activated, they induce the function NK-cell (a type of T-cell) that will target Prostate Antigens, destroys them and restore normal function of the prostate gland. When this is achieved, the GSH function of maintaining cellular redox state ensure that the prostate cells are healthier and maintained. Positive result of this strategy can be observed within 30 days of administration, though this approach is not for everyone.
