What is a nation? I’ve never really understood this surge I have, when I get goosebumps listening to ‘ay mere vatan ke logo’ or ‘vande matram’. For what or whom is this wave of emotion? A political concept? A boundary on the map and land which keeps changing and is almost always drawn in blood? A potpourri of cultures and religions that mingle and mangle at different times? What binds my heart with my ‘countryman’ – a common goal, a common vision, a common need, or complementary gifts and skills? I love you because you are on this side of the border and not on the other? Can people be in a country and not of it? Is patriotism commitment and loyalty to the living matrix of various cultures, religions, customs… then it will extend to the whole world… Am I feeling love for all cultures and religions and places? Then where is the need for different nations and armies to protect if we all feel this? And if we don’t, is it really love… If I cheat in any way, any person of my country can I still feel a surge of love for our nation? In a nation where leaders bend backwards to compete in corruption, where’s patriotism? Jineh naaz hai hind par who kahan hain? A thousand questions swirl in me as the tricolor flutters… Someone answer!
