What is depth of field? Depth of field is the distance between the nearest and the furthest objects within the image. The photographer determines which objects are in sharp focus. The focus points sets where the sharpest focus is, and the lens type, focal length and aperture all dictate how much depth of field you get. Generally, one third of the field appears in front of the point of focus and two thirds appear behind.
