What is it that Scotland seeks? ____________ 47. (of 48) The “Freedom Jewel” Jack Union was a thief. Of that, there was no doubt. In point of fact, he was what one might call a “career criminal” and it was not unknown for him to prey on his neighbours as well as committing crimes further afield. Jack Union had turned one neighbour’s – Dai’s – water supply to his own house. He had also raided Dai’s coal bunker so often that, by now, the latter had no coal left. Jack Union’s neighbour on the other side – Scott – had also suffered from Jack Union’s depredations. Scott was an iron and steel merchant and very soon after he had moved in, Jack Union had seized any iron and steel that was lying about Scott’s house and had sold it at a large profit for himself. This in turn funded Jack Union’s gambling lust and as often or not he was to be found in the town casinos spending these profits, where he was accompanied by his bosom friend, Sam Washington. Only last night, the pair could have been seen in the Iraq Venture casino, dissipating their (often illegally obtained) money. Casino owners had become wise to Jack Union and Sam Washington’s behaviour and had arranged things that they regularly lost money in their establishments. “No trickery in tricking a trickster” as the local saying went. The police of course knew of Jack Union’s behaviour but seemed either reluctant to act or maybe, and worse, they merely turned a blind eye to it. There were some who even alleged the police were bribed to stay quiet, and this would not have been that surprising, although it was as yet, not proven. Naturally, with the local newspaper, the Daily Garbage, owned by Jack Union’s friends, they were unlikely to rock the boat. Similarly, the local TV station, with its Director-General, Bibi See-Bias, in the pocket of Jack Union too, no adverse comment appeared in any media against Jack Union. It was often thought that a phone call or email from Jack Union to Bibi See-Bias was enough to ensure a favourable report of his activities and stop the revealing of any embarrassing details pertaining to Jack. Dai and Scott would rail furiously against this, but in reality, they had very little power in order to combat Jack Union’s formidable influence in town. Now, one could say the “pinnacle” in Jack Union’s “career” as a criminal mastermind was the seizure of Scott’s “Freedom Jewel” – a sparkling blue and white gemstone that Scott previously kept at home. The operation to take the jewel had taken place a few minutes after 5 p.m. – or to use the Continental fashion, 17:07, to be precise – one April afternoon. Jack Union had then placed the “Freedom Jewel” in his safe and had kept it secure ever since. Scott of course, was mad with rage at the theft and had been campaigning for the return of the blue and white “Freedom Jewel” since its theft. Knowing the police to be useless, he instead summoned his friends, Jacob Ite and Charlie Stewart to assist in recovering the gemstone. Sadly for Scott, both were soundly beaten by Redcotes, Jack Union’s man-servant on the steps of Culloden House, where they met one April evening at just after a quarter to six, or 17:46, if you prefer. Charlie Stewart himself was lucky to escape for his life that day, as Redcotes whistled for his master’s dog, Cumberland. Charlie Stewart fled, nursing a bloody nose. But all does not appear lost. Word has reached Scott that a new attempt will be made shortly to enter Jack Union’s house to recover the blue and white “Freedom Jewel,” and force open the safe. An insider (believed to be the footman, Jenkins) has let it be known what the safe’s combination code – 180914 – is. Scott is convinced that if he can rally enough friends together, then they can rush in on Jack Union, catch both himself and his cronies unawares and succeed in opening the safe. The tantalising prize of recovering the blue and white “Freedom Jewel” will then be within their grasp – quite literally, in fact. It all depends on whether Scott has enough brave friends to accompany him in carrying out the task of returning the gemstone to its rightful owner. The preparations for the raid on Jack Union’s house are going on apace and are getting very exciting. We will soon see if Scott and his friends are successful in regaining the “Freedom Jewel.” _________ (c) Sion Rees Williams (aka Welsh Admin) 2012-2014 All rights reserved _________ https://facebook/Parables.For.The.New.Politics https://facebook/media/set/?set=a.259514867559112.1073741846.137715503072383&type=1
