What is it that attracts one person to another? When we try to explain attraction, we talk of things such as looks, personality, sense of humor, intelligence, shared values, shared cultures and a hundred other things. But what if those things are simply justifications for something that’s far more mysterious and inexplicable? I’ve been thinking a lot about this recently, and I believe this is the case. When I think about the very few women who I’ve fallen deeply for, I find the rational explanations lacking. There’s almost always someone who’s prettier or smarter or more “whatever” than the person we fall for. I think there’s some other strange “chemical” or “psychic” factor, something we sense but don’t consciously understand. As with blood types, some people have a common “whatever-it-is” type and it’s easy to find someone who matches them. Others of us have the equivalent of AB negative blood type — the rarest type — so it means we match almost nobody. This would explain a lot. It would explain why I have intense and instant connection with a very few women and why I feel no connection with many who seem as though they would be smart and logical matches for me. It’s just a wild idea, but I suspect it’s true on some level. (I’ve been wanting to write about this, but it’s hard to figure out how to explain in an interesting way.)
