What is it with some rich people suddenly feeling persecuted? We learn in economics and corporate law classes that big companies knowingly pollute, poison, and plunder an unsuspecting public, and simply factor in the cost of getting caught into projected profit margins. For example, say a car company knows for years that its ignition switches and airbags will occasionally malfunction and occasionally kill people. An unfettered, and therefore successful free market would allow that, as long as the cost of settling a few wrongful death lawsuits after dodging liability for the deadly defects does not exceed the billions in profits made for the stockholders, the risk of killing a few hundred people is perfectly acceptable. Ayn Rand regarded the working class as lice. To her, and her protégé Paul Ryan, the non-rich are just an irritant that may be devalued or simply ignored, unless or until their numbers begin to affect systemic viability of the monolith. Let them be squashed like bugs on a windshield in summer, until visibility is at zero, then apply washer fluid sparingly, wipe clean(ish), and keep driving. Now that we live in an age of instantaneous/24/7/365 media coverage, those pesky lame-streamers are exposing so much toxic drilling, spilling, spewing, pluming, fuming, injecting, infecting, and electing of gummint officials who seem to be on the company payroll, millions of lice are just beginning to get collectively pissed to realize that they are being treated by the 1% as lice. And so the lice are speaking out in a very irritating fashion about irritating issues like fair pay and healthcare and corporate tax dodging and money hoarding and outsourcing and off shoring and climate change and the poisoning of the air, water, and food, just to send some extra cash to Davos. And all this irritating talk has got some rich corporate types feeling really persecuted and comparing their plight to that of the Jews in NAZI Germany…while privately thanking God for Putin and Oscar Pistorius and that Malaysian airliner.
