What is the Sunnah Dua at the time of Breaking Fast? Many people recite This Dua Before Breaking Fast Allaahumma laka sumtu wa bika amantu wa ‘ala rizqika aftartu Narrated Muadh ibn Zuhrah: The Prophet of Allah (ﷺ) used to say when he broke his fast: O Allah, for Thee I have fasted, and with Thy provision I have broken my fast. Grade :Daif (Al-Albani) [Sunan Abi Dawud » Book of Fasting (Kitab Al-Siyam) » Hadith#2358] This hadith is popular but it is weak due to (irsal). Irsal means a tabeei(generation right after sahabah) narrator of this hadith Muadh ibn Zuhrah attributed the hadith to the Prophet (sallAllaahu alaihi wasalam) without informing who the middle man was between himself and the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) . And, he for sure had not met the Prophet (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) . For that reason the hadith is classified as mursal and is classed as weak(Daeef). Daeef (weak) as stated by Ibn al-Qayyim (Zaad al-Maaad, 2/51) and also graded as Daeef(Weak) By Shaykh Albaani. Sunnah Dua : Narrated Abdullah ibn Umar(Radhi Allaahu anhu): Marwan ibn Salim al-Muqaffa said: I saw Ibn Umar holding his bread with his hand and cutting what exceeded the handful of it. He (Ibn Umar) told that the Prophet (sallAllaahu alaihi wasallam) said when he broke his fast: (“Dhahaba al-zama’ wa abtalat al-‘urooq wa thabat al-ajr in sha Allaah) (Thirst has gone, the veins are moist, and the reward is assured, if Allaah wills).” ( ذَهَبَ الظَّمَأُ وَابْتَلَّتِ الْعُرُوقُ وَثَبَتَ الأَجْرُ إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ.) (Sunan Abu Dawud Book #13, Hadith #2350) Classed as Hasan By Shaykh Albani The time of breaking the fast is a time when du’aa’s are answered, because it is the end of an act of worship, and because a person is usually at his weakest when breaking his fast. The greater a person’s sense of helplessness and weakness is, the closer he is to humility before Allaah
