“What is the best party you ever went to?” That is a tough - TopicsExpress

“What is the best party you ever went to?” That is a tough one. However, I know. Considering that I haven’t missed too many that is quite a feat of decisiveness. Liberty was always technically a privilege and not a right but I never saw it that way. While we were training out in 29 Palms in preparation for deployment to Iraq we typically trained in the field (just an expression the landscape actually looked like Mars) for a week or two and then got a weekend of liberty. Sometimes someone would do something horribly idiotic and liberty would be cut short. I took great offense to this. So when word went around one Saturday morning that we had a formation at noon I assumed they were cancelling the rest of Liberty and decided that we had no recourse but to drink as much as we could before they suspended revelry. We were going to “Grandfather clause in our buzz.” I had few supporters of this and when I arrived at the formation late it was clear I was not wearing my boots because I had them half off and was limping with the exaggerated gait of a beggar and there were other glaring uniform malfunctions and a sway like I might have been standing in a hurricane though the air on this day was calm. The irony was, and this is great, only my liberty was suspended. In fact I wasn’t allowed to drink for the rest of our time at 29 Palms. So the next time we had liberty I was sitting in the head (bathroom) of our barracks having a beer when Ryan asked what I was doing. I told him. He jumped in the stall next to me and I handed him a beer. Other guys came in and heard us laughing and we explained the situation, “McGee can’t drink out there so we are drinking in here” and we soon filled the stalls. More beer was brought in and we ended up having several folks in each stall and when the ipod and speakers arrived we all stood up on the toilets so we could hear the music and see each other. My entire squad was in there and some folks from others as well and Ryan surfed across the stall walls to get over from his original stall to the one I was in and that really got the party going. More beer was brought in and more people stall surfed and if you have ever had a full on party in a bathroom then you know the acoustics are fantastic. It may seem like an unlikely place for my favorite party but the whole thing was incredibly touching and it would have gone on longer but someone who had little sense of humor needed the head and insisted on shitting and we all left muttering about the party pooper. But I want to thank all the guys who came to that party. It meant a lot.
