What is the best way for screening oneself for colorectal cancer? Colorectal cancer has very good outcomes if detected in early stages. To detect these cancers early, one needs to have an annual stool check for occult blood. Usually these cancers start from small polyps in the colon and rectum. These polyps are small outgrowths in the lining membranes, small in size and usually non-malignant. They have one property - they bleed in very small quantities, This bleeding is not visible and thus require a stool test. Annual stool test. This test picks up occult blood in feces indicative of a disease loosing blood in the intestine. This test is very easy to get done and very cheap. If this test is positive, a colonoscopy needs to be done. Colonoscopy (putting a camera from the backside and doing an examination of the entire colon and rectum) is another way to detect these lesions early. If found negative it needs to be repeated after 5 years. This test does not require admission. However some preparation is needed before this test is done
