What is van Persie thinking now looking back at North London? BY LJUNGBERG Robin van Persie is one of the people who will be shocked by Arsenal’s decision to pay over £40 million for a transfer. The Dutchman left Arsenal to join Manchester United and win silverware, probably not believing that Arsene Wenger would ever drop his outdated transfer policy and pay big for superstar players. At long last he forked out a shed load of cash to ensure that Mesut Ozil signed on the dotted line for the Gunners, which has already created sparks of excitement over what Arsenal could potentially be capable of. It’s still far too early in the season to judge sides but Arsenal have enjoyed a better start to the season than Manchester United, regardless of the flat performance that saw them lose 3-1 to Aston Villa on the opening day. Van Persie also signed for the club at a time when Sir Alex Ferguson was arguably at his best, with no indication that he was going to leave the game when he did. Van Perise’s status as the main central striker at Old Trafford hasn’t changed, but a small part of his move was more than likely motivated by the prospect of working under Ferguson for several years. Move things back and whether he would sign for United under David Moyes ahead of another European giant like Juventus is debatable. Wenger has proven time and time again that when Arsenal play well, play perfect football and he gets his tactics right, they are unplayable and quite often produce some stunning displays in big matches. The Gunners are in a better financial position than ever before and the boss has just taken a big leap into the world of modern transfers. Arsenal have joined the list of clubs that will pay big for players and had things gone their way earlier in the summer, they would also be boasting the signing of Luis Suarez from Liverpool. Another ingredient to add to all of this is that Arsenal are in the mix near the top of the table, more than competitive and going through probably the worst injury crisis the side will face this season. If they can get through this spell, then key players will keep coming back and will keep adding strength to the squad and starting eleven heading into the busy winter period and the rest of the season. Van Persie took a gamble because he didn’t think the Arsenal he played for was ever going to change and that Arsenal was clearly going to struggle to challenge for silverware. He will always stick by that decision because for professional reasons, it was the right thing to do at the time. They may still struggle but Ozil makes Arsenal a better side and he’s a sign of things to come and a sign that Wenger is no longer afraid to put his money where his mouth is, rewarding Gunners fans for years of hardship and faith when ticket prices have gone up and doubts have crept in.
