What other people think can have a big influence on our choices. In fact, it can have a massive influence on our choices. And – our choices are ultimately what determine the outcome of our lives. One of the key insights that helped me turn my life around was realizing that I need to become more aware of the choices and the consequences of the choices I was making. Every choice has a consequence. And many times we are not aware of the staggering consequences of all the choices we have and are making. Perhaps one of the most disempowering choices we can make is to allow what other people think about us to define us. It doesn’t matter if they are praising us or blaming us – what they think about you doesn’t define you. If anything, it adds insight into who they are. Time after time, I hear stories of people who come to my seminars, retreats and mentoring program who say, “It’s time to choose me.” And each time they say it, it feels like a war torn veteran has finally come home. All the years and years that they’ve allowed other people to define them have finally produced enough disappointment that they decided now is the right time to change their life. My hope is that it doesn’t have to get bad before you change. My hope is that you can change this now. Here are some questions: 1. Where in your life do you allow other people to define your choices? 2. Who are the people you allow to define your choices? 3. Why is what this person or people think about you more important than what you think about you? 4. What has allowing this person or people to define your choices cost you up until this point? 5. If it didn’t matter what these people thought and you got to decide, what new choices would you make now? This question sequence is very powerful. See if you can take a moment and answer them completely. Really try to get clear on the answers. The truth is that no one knows what’s best for you, but you. Period. Other people might have good ideas and intentions, but they don’t have to live with the consequences of your choices – you do. So – what new choices are you going to make today?
