Whats on my mind? As a mother of a young black male, I feel that - TopicsExpress

Whats on my mind? As a mother of a young black male, I feel that I need to have dialogue with my son, and any other young black males who will hear me, regarding the social climate in which we currently live. I am, FIRST and FOREMOST, a GOD-FEARING woman, and I believe with EVERY fiber of my FAITH that He WILL fix this thing that is eroding our society down to basic killer instincts and injustices meted out inequitably by those in the seats of power to those who are considered lower class. I have to let him/them know that there is, unfortunately, a double standard that still exists in this USA. There are still those who believe that the lines should not be blurred between us and them. I also need him to know that while there are still well-meaning people out there who do not subscribe to racial hatred and the like, there are also some who DO! My son should know that what works for his friends who are of another race with regards to interaction with law enforcement might not necessarily work for him. I see videos of non-black individuals who, when pulled over by police, indulge in debates with officers regarding their right not to show identification, or roll their windows down or give requested information, and it goes on and on with the cop eventually being made to to feel foolish and giving up... however, honestly, I would advise my son AGAINST such a course of action. Not because I dont think he has access the same rights, but I have, too often, seen instances where people who look like my son are not given the luxury of disobeying any command, even if they are innocent of any crime, they are quickly tasered, pepper-sprayed, shot, tackled and shackled. It would not bode well for him to refuse to comply immediately and pray for the truth to come out. That above all else, he should respond in a manner that will ensure that he can live to die another day. I need to re enforce what the scripture says about vengance being the Lords, and letting Him fight our battles. That a soft answer turns away wrath, I also have to figure out how to teach that without trying to make him a push over or a wuss. A man has to be a man, but I need him to be a thinking man, not a reactionary one. Yes, you might be angry about the unfairness of it all, but anger most times will exacerbate the problem rather than calm it. Does my position seem to be one based on fear or faith? Just dont want my son to end up a statistic. Its getting bad out there!
