Whats on your mind?, asks FB. Something thats been on my mind for 20 years, yet I know neither the right contact with suitable skill nor have a clear design of my own to pursue it. So here it is: Sliding doors have been around on panel trucks for decades. So, WHERE IS A FORWARD SLIDING DOOR for your passenger vehicle?? Its not even being considered by futurists. Next time you see say an Art Center rendering of some major companys concept vehicle for 2015, 16,... 2040, it will be sleek as snot... Just standing still look like its breaking the sound barrier. But the outline for the door will show it being about five feet wide... hinges in the front so it can swing open. No no no! Even now, more often than not you have to be ever so careful opening your door in a parking lot lest you ding the neighboring car. Have to park just so, lest you cant open it far enough to get out. And God help you if you open one into moving traffic. Sure, there are gull wing doors, an even one that is like a roll top desk... rolls down under your car. But no. This has to be simple. Now please dont waste time writing back how it is easy on a van because you can have a track up there... how a car shape is different than a van or something. No. Or that if this was a good idea, Detroit have already done it. Im not saying this project will be a slam dunk, but for my buck, I dont care what it looks like, or that the mechanism breaks up the aerodynamics... or will be costly ( even $500 extra would be worth it). I WANT THIS. You will too once you think about it. From now on, everytime you open your door, youll get what Im talking about. Hey, you or one of you friends figure out how to build this and a bundle will be made! PS, dont start thinking about patenting, just start makingm, for Christs sake! And, no... you dont want it to be a back sliding door unless your car is a two door. Heres the action: your park, shut down the engine. You unlatch and the door springs forward nicely on a track and/or casters that let down to the ground. Step out, Pull the door back with either hand and, kurrchunk. It clicks shut.
