But so much of the English language derives from others! According to surveys by Thomas Finkenstaedt et al, the percentage of modern English words derived from each language group are as follows: Latin: ~ 29% French: ~ 29% Germanic: ~ 26% Greek: ~ 6% Proper names: ~4% Others/unknown: ~ 6% I think my favorite borrowed word is bungalow from the Bengali word bangal meaning small house.
