Whats your view on old characters? I have to agree with Don that - TopicsExpress

Whats your view on old characters? I have to agree with Don that they were probably never intended to be played on a competitive level and are just there to dick around with. Otherwise why would they be hidden and not selectable at the character select like on HSF2 where you can pick the version? Capcom made a lot of changes when they went from the Super versions of the characters to Super Turbo. Ryu and Kens hitboxes/hurtboxes were changed significantly for example and the hurtboxes were extended as their normals were a bit too good before. I think its also telling how they didnt just slap a super move on to the character and instead took the time to rebalance all their hitboxes and move properties. If you want to know how good the hitboxes are for old Ryu and Ken, they are basically the same as Akumas. Yep. Even back then they obviously knew about the 50/50 knock down on the tatsu and removed that for the Super Turbo versions of the characters. Old Sagats tiger shots were considered too good and so more recovery was added. My other issue with old characters is that I feel a lot of their gameplay is very mindless. For example old Sagat can just mash fireball all day and it makes it very difficult for the majority of characters to deal with, and the same with old Ryu and Ken where you can just throw out dragon punches or air tatsus without much consequence as the moves are so strong. I imagine its a divisive topic, but I look at it in a very simple way - the characters were changed significantly from their previous iteration because Capcom deemed them too good/unbalanced. Its kind of like how no one plays HSF2 because the old characters are pretty stupid, or how edition select is not used for tournament play. So why are old characters tolerated?
