When Alfie Kohn went on the Oprah show to be interviewed, they set up their own experimental research to see if the group of teenagers who were offered money to complete a task would be more or less motivated and dedicated to their project than the group of teenagers who were asked to do it but not offered a reward. The results are VERY interesting. Check it out! I find myself in teaching parenting courses that one of the toughest concepts for many parents to grasp is that rewarding kids (whether its sticker charts, gold stars, money, pocket money, lots of praise to reinforce positive behaviour, treats, extra time with parent) can possibly have more of a negative effect than a positive effect. That rewards actually de-motivate rather than motive children. And that reward systems get in the way of the development of self-discipline and self-motivated learning and team work. ~ Genevieve
