When Gods name gets used to exclude, wound, or vilify, God gets abused. Oh, God can take it, but the let down is sure. We are called to a radical brand of love, one that discards the usual measures of wealth and status and just-like-us. When we love that way, we draw nearer to living up to the God brand. We are more deserving, then, to speak the name and co-brand ourselves People of God. Americans, on this Independence Day weekend, Im reminded the poor of the third world have a remarkable way of being happier than we. Were rich, and theyre joyous. Theyre poor, and we want what they have. Love can get lost in stuff. Its like a set of keys buried in a pile of gold. And it unlocks just what were longing for, after all. Great love to all. For all. Within all.
