When I arrived at the University of Florida, the campus was glowing on the horizon with intensity. It was like an imaginary city I had dreamed about my entire life. I had big dreams, and I raced towards the horizon with my dreams in anticipation of the future. My only wish was that all my dreams would come true. I thought I was going to be a track star. The fastest miler the university had ever seen. I thought I would graduate in the top of the class. I thought I would finish college in four years. I thought I would get a perfect job, and five years later be making a hundred and fifty thousand dollars. I thought I would have met the girl of my dreams and fall in love, and we would live happily ever after. I thought I was going to follow the yellow brick road right into the future and disappear somewhere over the rainbow. It never happened like that though. When I made it to the horizon, the façade started melting right in front of me like an oil painting on fire, along with all my dreams and everything else, and I walked right through it. I walked right through the illusion. It wasn’t real. Nothing in life is what it seems. The yellow brick road ended abruptly, and where it ended I was standing alone, looking out over a huge crack in the earth and out over an endless chasm. my feet toed the edge of a cliff with jagged edges and razor sharp cornices, and looking down at the clouds drifting through it thousands of feet below like a river, I closed my eyes and jumped. I hear nothing now but my racing heartbeat and the wind as it rushes past my ears like a hurricane, like the violent whirlwind that I’m caught up in, and I’m still falling. I wonder if I will ever see the world the same again? I wonder if I will ever find myself again? - 2001
