When I cease coaching, I will take with me countless memories of the young people with whom I have had the opportunity to work. Those memories will be mostly fond ones, but not all. Coaches must make difficult decisions at times and those decisions can be hurtful to those affected. For example six players of relative equal skills, but spots for only five. And coaches know that for all their efforts to be fair that one must be excluded and that that decision will change the nature of a relationship that means far more to the coach than it does to the player. It is the single most difficult aspect of a profession that is filled with the joy of observing boys and girls in their progress to manhood and womanhood. So, the coach weighs all factors and makes the decision that he/she feels is best and hopes that, somehow, all will understand. But the coach knows that this is impossible. Objectivity is not possible to the wounded athlete or parents.
