When I heard the revised version of this posted below the lyrics and entire arrangement blew me away. The words refer to an old poem put to music in WW2 and an early 20th century song. A soldier boy came home one night To find his house without a light He went upstairs to go to bed A sudden thought came to his head He went into his daughters room To find her hanging from a beam He took his knife to cut her down And to her breast this note he found Oh Father Dear, I died through shame To bear a child without a name And if hed lived to be a boy He would have been your pride and joy So dig a grave and dig it deep And place white lillies at my feet And to my head please place a dove To show the world I died for love So he dug a grave and dug it deep And placed white lillies at her feet And to her head, he placed a Dove To show the world, she died for love So all you maidens bear in mind A sailors heart is hard to find And if you find one good and true Please dont exchange it for a new Oh dig a grave and dig it deep And place white lillies at my feet And to my head please place a dove To show the world I died for love. The other lyrics that follow refer to Oh, Didnt He Ramble: Didnt he ramble.... he rambled Rambled all around.... in and out of town Didnt he ramble....didnt he ramble He rambled till the butcher cut him down His feet was in the market place..his head was in the street Lady pass him by, said..look at the market meat He grabbed her pocket book..and said I wish you well She pulled out a forty-five..said Im head of personnel Didnt he ramble...I said he rambled Rambled all around...in and out of town Didnt he ramble...oh didnt he ramble He rambled till the butcher shot him down Paired together so beautiful and poignant.
