When I launched my own book in September of 2012, I decided to go for what I was then calling the “ripple effect” approach--I didn’t do any long-lead publicity, I just hired a publicist to do some outreach after the book was published and hoped word would spread based on our combined efforts. What I learned: the “ripple effect” is bullshit; it doesn’t work. If you want to sell books, you have to do a traditional publicity campaign, and that needs to start three months prior to your book coming out.
