When I saw Jolomi Whites notification to members about songs that remind one of something at one time or the other in ones life, I said to myself, this could not have come at better time. The date was August 23, 1990, exactly 24 years ago today. One of the best fiends I had ever had, Hypolite whom we all fondly called Hippo had died sometime around 4:00 am on that day. I had shed all the tears I had on the day day and sometime around noon I went to the house of a friend (not a mutual friend between me and my just departed friend) and I took a seat in his very noisy living room, thanks to the loud music blaring from his speakers. He could see that my mood was not good at all and he asked me what the matter was. I was unable to speak and he said dont worry, Ive got just the the thing to cheer you up. He stopped the music and he put in another cassette into the player and this new song by Diana Ross called Im Still Waiting was playing. Of course it was not exactly a new song. She had originally done this song as a slow soulful ballad in 1973 and had now remixed it into a dance classic in 1990 and though the song sounded really good, nothing and I mean NOTHING could cheer me up on the day. In any case I never even knew of the earlier version of this song at the time so it was completely new to me. I dont hear this song as frequently as I once did but whenever I have the occasion to hear, sing or even hum it, there is no way I am not thinking of my dear departed friend Hippo.
