When I turned six in August 1958, I got a fluffy, snowy-white toy - TopicsExpress

When I turned six in August 1958, I got a fluffy, snowy-white toy kitten with bright blue eyes and a tiny pink nose. It even had whiskers. I loved that 4" toy kitten and took very, very good care of her. I could hardly wait to show my friends on sharing day when school started up again in September. I just knew my friends would love my kitten as much as I did. Summer days ended and school began. My turn to share "Fluffy" was soon to be! The big day came! I knew that sharing Fluffy meant passing her around the circle, but I did not know that passing Fluffy would mean rough, careless, dirty fingers . . . plucked whiskers, and matted fur. I was horrified when Fluffy returned to the safety of my loving hands with both of her sparkly blue eyes missing and in their place splotches of dried glue. I cried all the way home. Since that time I have had cherished porcelain figurines chipped. Favorite Christmas ornaments have lost their sheen. Favorite books, bracelets, and charms gone. But none of this prepared me for the true devastation of shattered hearts, dreams gone bad, human suffering, or good-byes. The hurts just keep getting bigger, the wounds deeper. cw~2013
