When I was a senior in high school my mom had just split from a bad relationship. As was typical of leaving a situation like that, we had nothing. That year things were pretty bad economically in Michigan. My mom was working odd jobs to try to make ends meet. Needless to say, we were not in a situation to have much for Christmas. My mother went to go pick up a tree for someone about a week before Christmas. The lot owner asked if we had our tree already. She told him that we werent going to get one that year. He made her go pick a tree. When she came back with the littlest, scrawniest tree she could find he went out and picked one himself. We had no decorations. So, I made some stuff out of old ribbon and construction paper. Another person gave my mother a bottle of cheap sparkling wine. We had nothing to put underneath that tree that year. But it was fine. We had each other and that was more than enough. that Christmas Eve we opened the wine and drank a toast (or 2 or 3) to each other and the best that life had to bring for us.
