When I was a teenager, I had read about how Bob Dylan had wrote a lot of great protest songs. But it was the early 80s so Dylans music was not readily available to a kid like me. So I asked a friend what Dylan album I should buy first. (I believe it was Patricia Sullivan Goecks.) She said get Another Side of Bob Dylan. So bought it and went right home to hear all the great protest songs. It wasnt quite what I had expected, but when I heard It Aint Me Babe I thought, Wow. That really is a great protest song! Hes protesting against having to play this stereotypical male role that society demands all young men play. The woman he is addressing is really society, and he is refusing to die for [her] and more. (At the time, I was very concerned about a law that said I would have register for the draft on my eighteenth birthday. I thought I war in the Middle East or in Central America was right around the corner.) I read more on Dylan and learned the album I bought was supposed Dylan abandoning his protest phase. But even today, I hear this song and think, wow, what a great protest song.
