When I was a very small child, whenever something struck me as being unfair, Id complain that it was, well, unfair. The response, no matter to whom I was speaking, was Life isnt fair. But I knew that was a lame, cop-out response. I knew that was dismissive and thoughtless. What I wanted to articulate but couldnt due to a lack of both understanding and vocabulary, was Yes. I know life isnt fair. But we have thought. We have conscience. We have power. Shouldnt it be our goal, as a race of sentient creatures, to MAKE life be fair? Shouldnt we, whenever possible, actively strive for justice? NATURE isnt fair, CHANCE isnt fair, but since when does the human race meekly accept either as its master without a fight? We have an obligation to bring justice and equality to our world every bit as much as we bring science and art. But I couldnt say all that when I was a small child. Now I have. So, about that cookie before dinner......
