When I worked on the last Rough Guide, I covered Southern Thailand and witnessed this a few times as a real, embarrassing and terrifying problem. The most heartbreaking I came across was on Koh Mak in the Gulf of Thailand, where tons of rubbish was washed up on the beach daily; - bungalow owners battling to keep in business and travellers wary of swimming, as it wasnt all paper and plastic. I found a number of flip-flop trees, where someone had decorated the mangrove with washed up flip-flops. Our irresponsibility is visibly catching up with us.
