When I write a song, I have touchstone favourite songs that I refer to, to see if Im on the right (write) lines. I like to see how great writers express the same usual suspects of emotions that we all soul mine; love, loss, etc. (Some would see this as plagiarism, but Ive yet to be caught..!). One of of these touchstones is Never Saw Blue like that, sung by, but not written by Shawn Colvin, who herself is someone I look to often for ideas. Ben Robbins, a writer I work with often, and I had a songwriting session with a New York writer Jeff Franzel at Bens place in London. It was a first meeting, so as we were sharing snippits of ideas over a coffee and getting to know each other, Jeff asked who I looked to for inspiration. I said some songs I love and then said if Im writing a love song, Never Saw Blue was a benchmark as the lyrics and melody for me, are so great. Jeff smiled and said I was one of the writers on that. I said, Ill get me coat. Despite having massive songwriting envy, I kept it together and we managed to write a cool tune that day called Stong ,that the fabulous Mario Frangoulis recorded. youtube/watch?v=hQr2PKTROT8 Here is the co-writer and amazing Tom Kimmels lyrics, and a little story of the song inception... tomkimmel/music/blue/blue/
